What if I said ITZY were just testing the waters?

The preview of their upcoming comeback title track Sneakers was not received well on Twitter. This was a paramount surprise to me. I understand that the contrast between the idiosyncratic track and the stately teasers would've caused some stir and discombobulation, but the sheer amount of backlash I saw was just staggering… and confounding.

It simply sounds like an ITZY song! This music style shouldn't be this huge of a shock, despite whatever vibe the concept photos gave off. Is this not just their signature sound? Was this not what you signed up for? To be fair, their entire concept revolves around being different and proud of their distinguished style no matter what people think of it, and the dauntless, wacky, slightly musically questionable songs they release are a perfect representation of that individualistic pride. It would honestly be a little sad and contradictory to their message if they dropped it so soon and conformed into acceptably mainstream elegance, wouldn't it? I certainly wouldn't want them to lose their sound—they're only just over three years in.

But, here's where my theory comes in: though I was just talking about not wanting them to shift concepts already, I have a wavering prediction that their next comeback may as well be sleeker in sound and looks. There could be several reasons as to why the management decided to have the album teasers be so contrastive to the music video and title track, but in my opinion, it may have been strategically planned to collect intel on the public's reception to this change of concept for the girls. They threw out those teasers, but they made sure to play it safe with the music, sticking to their original style. They were testing the waters—if people liked that concept (and people definitely did), the files on 'queenly and opulent ITZY' may be kept and expanded on for the next comeback. Then, we'll have a taste of that side of ITZY sliding into the next release.

That won't be something I'm opposed to, of course, because I do think the girls look gorgeous like this. I just hold a tiny seed of fear that doing as such will result in the mid-ification of their so-boldly-defined sound. It's a sound that's not for everyone, but they've built a community of new wave K-Pop fans on it. I don't doubt their fanbase will stay standing if that original foundation fades into the years, but I'll feel a little sentimental. Where will we get our fair share of bizarre beats and teenage-spirited pandemoniums in the comeback pool, then?
