ive 4th gen leaders
Dec. 3rd, 2021 05:30 pmSome brief thoughts on IVE, the new Starship Ent. girl group, currently most well known for securing previously-IZ*ONE members Yujin and Wonyoung, a fourteen year old Leeseo, and a member who apparently looks like she should be in Billie (I forgot who it was):
Me being me, I of course kept up with the debut teasers, and I watched the music video, listened to the single when it came out. Because I'm a silly WIZ*ONE. Nothing notable stood out to me, although I did enjoy the song averagely well. After downloading it and listening to it (and the B-side) some more over the next few days, I did grow to liking the music immensely. Rei and Leeseo's pre-choruses with that skillfully and creatively placed ritardano is truly a brain-melter. ELEVEN has been an occasional repeat song on my phone since.
While the song is unarguably catchy (even if it takes a couple listens to fully marinate), the concept is just another one of your typical 4th Gen flashy girlboss aesthetics. I have nothing against those--some I even particularly enjoy--but I think it's safe to say we've had more than enough, especially as of late. But you know what! Yujin and Wonyoung are slayers, and I'm going to trust the others are as well (although Starship does seem to have the tendency to add a token dozen or two to a group), so I'll let it slide. Again. I'm just a really nice and lenient person, you know.
Moving on. So today the Music Bank stage of ELEVEN popped up in my YouTube recommended, and like any normal procrastinating person with attention issues, I pulled it up and checked it out (the thumbnail was Wonyoung, after all). I'll have to admit I was absorbed. Maybe then I realized I likely have nothing to worry about; they really are all slayers. I was already obsessed with the song, but after that, I'm full crazy for their performance as well. I was honestly quite surprised since this group's members are... very young (flashback to oomf's tweet "ive singing you make me feel like eleven because that's how old they are"). However, they all seem to know what they're doing and have what it takes--Leeseo included, god bless. We love you Leeseo; you're a trooper. I cannot believe you're my sister's age. Gaeul caught my eye the most, despite having the same two lines the whole song. She is so pretty. And the biggest relief I felt when I ascertained she's older than me.
The dance isn't anything special, but it is nice. I wanted to make note of a certain part I liked: Liz's verse "그날 향기로운 보랏빛의 mood" where she, Wonyoung, and Leeseo have their own little triplet part. I replayed that more than a few times. I just thought it was visually pleasing and cool! It would be cooler if they were a tad more in sync, but hey, they're doing their best and it still looks good. Also, at the chorus--the part where they say "heaven"-- that hand eating movement is kind of funny to me. I love it though. Eat! (Pun intended.)
I will say--as a side note--I don't think the girl crush concept suits Wonyoung well (but don't get me wrong, she's still eating it up.) Her visuals are more on the elegant and saccharine side! Ah, like an Oh My Girl SSFWL or Secret Garden concept? Perfect for her. She would be in Utopia Team on Girls Planet 999.
Okay sidetracked there, but I'm saying! I do feel IVE have the potential to be... ahem, 4th Gen leaders, is what the kids call it nowadays. The girls are talented; their music is above average and so is their performance level. They have a bright future. All I can do now is pray Starship doesn't nuke their discography. (My thoughts go out to Cravity... they took one for the team. Hoping Exy was just saving her good songs for the girlies.)
